Mobile applications have taken the world by storm. Thousands of apps are created by the hour. But here are a few applications that have grown on to almost a necessity. Their usage and number of downloads exemplify their popularity.


1) Dropbox: An absolute necessity if you’re one of those people who travel around a lot. It’s been around for quite some time, but continues to be one of the most used mobile application. Dropbox is a cloud based application that allows you to sync files across all your devices (laptops, Pc’s, tablets, smartphones and so on). The files will remain accessible from anywhere, and any changes you make to it will be instantly synced across all your devices the moment you go online. Any of these files can be accessed when you are offline .Dropbox is available for Microsoft Windows, Mac OS, Linux, Android iOS and Blackberry iOS.

2) Facebook: The official social networking platform of all of humanity, and it’s available as an application for smartphones. Consequently it is the most popular mobile application in the USA in terms of users. With people’s constant need to access this social networking site, it has gone on to become an absolute necessity. It allows you to be privy to every one of your friend’s latest updates, while you’re on the move. Since it’s available for almost every smartphone OS, the odds are you already have it.

3) Instagram: Photo sharing has become an absolute breeze with instagram. It allows you to apply digital filters to them before sharing them on your social networking profile. The digital filters transform even mediocre photos taken through your cell phone into professional-looking pictures. As of now, you can share your photos on a photo-by-photo basis on Facebook, Flickr and Twitter. It has over a 100 million users as of June 2013 and is growing rapidly. It is available for free in the Apple App Store and Google Play store.

4) Google Wallet: If you are tired of digging around in your wallet for a particular credit card every time you shop; then this your perfect solution. After you have registered all your cards, this app allows you to pick the card you want, tap the back of your phone on an NFC checkout register and be on your way. All your information is securely stored on Google’s servers; hence in the instance of losing your phone, you can immediately disable all your details remotely. As of May 15th 2013, Google announced the integration of Google wallet and Gmail, allowing users to send money via Gmail attachments.

5) Sign easy: This app puts behind you the hassles of dealing with scanners, printers and so on; just to be able to sign a document. It is the most convenient way for professionals to sign documents via smartphones and tablets. Not only does it save you precious time, it facilitates the whole process of getting the signed document back to wherever it needs to be in a timely manner.

6) Angry Birds Star Wars: It is fact that the largest percentages of mobile applications downloaded daily are games. And as is common knowledge, few mobile games can rival the popularity of Angry Birds. But, even more tantalizing is the idea of two major global brands coming together to create Angry Birds Star Wars. Having a theme set in space this application has enjoyed a magnanimous amount of users. It is supported by Windows iOS, Android iOS and more recently the Mac and Blackberry.

7) WhatsApp: A very popular messaging application which allows its users to exchange messages without having to pay for SMS. It helps you save on your precious mobile credit and keeps you in touch with your friends. Since WhatsApp uses the normal internet data plan that you use for browsing, there are no hidden costs that come to surprise you. It is available for Android, Windows Phone iPhone, BlackBerry and Nokia. 

8) Google Maps for Android: Though it was released only a year ago, it has gained tremendous popularity. It gives you an accurate turn by turn navigation to your destination. It even allows you offline access. If you plan to use public transportation; then too this trusty app will provide you with the required information. It unquestionably outshines Apples version of the same application.

9) Trello: This application is the perfect platform to organize anything. From birthday parties to million dollar projects; this application helps co-ordinate complex projects. It is simple to use and very flexible in terms of application. It shows a virtual corkboard containing tasks to be done, people in charge of task and what projects are coming up next. You can assign people to a task by simple dragging and dropping their avatars. The changes you make are instantly synced and stored in the trello website. You can easily manage any project while you sit in the comfort of your office or while you are on the move.

10) My Tracks: This is an application released by Google that tracks your speed and distance covered. It also tracks the elevation and the path taken. This is done by using the GPS and accelerometer while the user is running or brisk walking. It even allows you to store your run data to an external storage. Now, you can track your fitness progress over time and hopefully be satisfied with the results.
